Jesus is Born: The Shepherds Story.

Bible Reading

Luke 2

1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Bible Story: The Man Who Said Thank You!

Before you tell kids this story read the prompt.
  Prompt:

Luke 17:11-19

King James Version (KJV)
"11And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
12And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."

Now here's how you can tell the story to kids about The Man Who Said Thank You!

THE MAN WHO SAID THANK YOU!
Once along time ago back in a place called Israel.  There where Ten lepers.  Do you know what a leper is?  (wait for answers if one of them gets it right tell them and continue.)  A leper is a person with a sickness that makes their skin really dry and makes them get sours (Owies for really little kids) and even makes their skin start to peal off.  These Ten lepers were all sitting in the outside of town because they where not aloud to go into the city because they had leprosy.  All of a sudden they saw a man and a group of others entering the city.  Can you guess who they saw? (let them answer) They saw Jesus! And they started yelling  "Jesus! Master have Mercy on us!" Can you yell? (have the kids yell with you or skip the yelling)  Then Jesus saw them and he said to them "Go show yourselves to the priests."
So they obeyed Jesus and went to show themselves to the priests. (pretend to walk to the priests by stomping your feet on the ground or if at a table tap your hands on the table.)  (calm the kids down and then continue)  And guess what happened when they went to see the priest like Jesus had said?  They were healed the priest said that they where all better!  Jesus had healed them! They where all so excited all of them ran off into the city, except for one.  This man ran to go find Jesus, he thought to himself I must find Jesus and thank him!  When he found Jesus Fell at Jesus' feet and thanked him and praised him, giving glory to God.  Then Jesus asked "Were there not ten healed? But where are the other nine?
"They did not return to give glory to God." replied the man.
And then Jesus said to him "Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
Jesus was happy when he saw the man thanked him.

STORY QUESTIONS/ REFLECTION
  1.  Do you think Jesus likes it when you say thank you to him?
  2. Did Jesus like it when the man came back to him and said thank you?
  3. Have you said thank you to Jesus today?
  4. How about your parents?
